Queen Evelina is the victorious hero of the war that freed her countrymen from tyrannical invaders and her own wicked father. She is revered by the people—mighty of arms, inspired with strategy and relentless in tenacity... thirsty of blood, towering with pride, and cemented in obstinance—she is feared by the people. Old enemies seek her ruin, the fall of her kingdom and a return to power. Known as the Dawnmaiden to those who love her, and as the Bloody Virgin to those that hate her; will Evelina overcome her own flaws and spite, or will she become indistinguishable from the villains she fights? Dead Kings is a character driven fantasy epic in a vast world of warring kingdoms, conquering empires and godlike necromancers.

Hard to say what's great about it that hasn't already been said. A myriad of great characters (Mayaflora and Maire being IMO the best.) And characters you'll hate. Great plot, with a world developing very well around it. Swords, elves, burly badass types.

To make it better, Evelina isn't just a rampaging badass slaughter queen (she is though, but for good reason.)

It does require some reading into, however. A lot I didn't fully understand at first became clear on second readings (certain chapters I've read thred to four times). I 100% still recommend it to anyone.

Dead Kings The Dawnmaiden A J Wilson Nicholas Isemann Nathan Wasner 9781521264393 Books Reviews

One of the most fantastic fantasy adventure books I've ever read. The characters are thoroughly developed throughout an amazing story that entices the reader and envelopes them in the world Wilson has created.
This book is one of those hidden gems that makes you glad you chanced across it. Wilson creates a world which is believably realistic, stepped in history and lore without overburdening the plot, which flows nicely, although with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The action is engaging and character interactions are gripping, be they humorous or dramatic, and it has one of the most respectful depictions of a same-sex romantic relationship I’ve seen in western media. The prose is at once poetic and relatably mundane, as the author is unafraid to paint a beautiful picture in words just to make a silly, if not humorous, joke. The effect is as if one were channeling the stylings of John Scalzi and H. P. Lovecraft at the same time, and as odd as that pairing might sound, Wilson just makes it work. I highly recommend this to fans of fantasy of any flavor, to those looking for the works of George R. R. Martin without all the hatred for life and joy.
The tone was all over the place. A murderous queen who goes giddy over her sister and her lover, an irritating urchin raised from the dead for comic relief, scores of undead hordes and the vicious depopulation of innocent towns... The inconsistency of the emotions and tone gave me a headache.

The queen's lover (the author seemed to fetishize an "adorable"relationship for some reason, though the relationship was just forced and incongruous with the events in the story.) spoke in an incomprehensible conlang that the author obviously thought was clever. It was just irritating, since the other characters had to interpret or just left the words unexplained. There was no context from which to interpret a meaning.

Entire chapters are devoted to watching the queen and her sister accomplish nothing for no apparent reason. Their motivation is an utter puzzle. Ostensibly it's "be queen to stop the undead from killing everyone", but the queen seems to loathe her subjects and commits more casual murders than all the undead put together.

I got this for free. I overpaid.
Maire is the best girl. You should all vote for Maire. Lots of great characters in this book, but Maire is the best one.
Wonderful fantasy novel! I don't usually read fantasy, but I may start after reading this. Very well written with great character development.
Easily the best fantasy novel I've read since Terry Brook's Shannara series. I can't wait to read the next in the series!
This book was awesome. I'm not sure what to say, other than that if you like fantasy adventure, you'll probably love this book. Great characters, tricky plot, and plenty of action. The author had damn well better finish the sequel though D
