This was a very straightforward story. The heroine is just coming out of mourning for her good for nothing husband. She had been married to him for four years and she had been miserable. He hadn't been physically abusive but hadn't been a gentle and tender lover. In fact he had taken his pleasure elsewhere with whores and whomever else he could find.The heroine had been in love with the hero since she was 18. She has come to him to ask that he teach her the art of giving and receiving sexual pleasure. He is supposed to be one of the most capable lovers in London.
The hero has been in love with her since she was 18, but he was going off to war and didn't feel it would be right for him to offer for her. When and if he came back he meant to ask her to marry him. However upon his return he learned she had married.
So here they find themselves -- she realizes she never stopped loving him, and he knows he never got over her. But he thinks she doesn't want to marry again but instead take a lover.
The story is of her awakening to not only the physical feelings of love but to her feelings for him. The story is short and there is no distraction from the main characters.
The writing was good and it was an OK story.

Pretty good, but I never felt drawn into the story. The interactions between Marcus and Julianna felt a bit forced and flat, I wasn't convinced of any emotional attachment until the story was almost over. And then the emotional dialogue was a bit cheesy and actually made me cringe
"He swung her up completely into his arms, pausing only long enough to allow her to open the door. ‘In the knowledge that I will always love you, Julianna,’ he told her throatily.
'Let us show each other our love.’ Julianna glowed up at Marcus as she allowed him to carry her up the stairs. To heaven."
Overall I thought this was pretty good. I didn't dislike the story, but I didn't love it. It might have been better as a longer book with more character and relationship development.
MARCUS WILDING DUKE OF PLEASURE is a very short novella that introduces Mortimer's new series. It is the story of Julianna Armitage who was widowed after being married to a disagreeable man who cared not about her. She has come to Marcus Wilding, Duke of Worthing to ask him to tutor her as to pleasure so that she can take a lover. Unknown to Julianna, Marcus has loved her for years and now intends on luring her into marriage.
This novella is short and good enough but there is little disclosed about Marcus and Julianna except for their physical relationship that is detailed here. The novella is a nice start to the series but was too short for me to really care about the characters. It was worth the price (free!) and the time I spent reading it. I look forward to reading more of the series.
This short story is an introduction to a new series about a group of rakish Dukes in Regency England. The plot revolves around Lady Armitage, the widowed sister of one of the friends and her request for information about sexual matters from the most rakish of the group, Marcus, the Duke of Worthington.
They've each secretly been in love with the other since she was a teen, but Marcus didn't want to tie her down when he was fighting in the wars, so he said nothing, and her parents married her off while he was gone. After suffering a miserable marriage, she's relieved to be a widow. Feeling she knows nothing about what should go on in the bedroom, she asks for some help, putting Marcus in a really awkward spot, but perhaps with an interesting opportunity to have another chance.
There are sexual scenes and sexual content and mild violence in this story. The first two full length books in the series are available already. I'm not sure if Marcus gets another story, but there are 5 Dukes in the group of friends, so likely 4 books.
Heat factor hot.
This book leans more on an erotic side than on a romantic level.
I've read many books written by Carole Mortimer over the years that have left me with great satisfaction. Her latest Warrior Alpha is one such book. However, this particular historical romance made me feel as if it were a chore to read it. I wanted to love this story and the characters but found it hard. For me, the plot was predictable and on an overall level, the story did not capture my entire attention. I love stories that grab you by the shirt front and pull you in instantly. This one just doesn't do it for me. For a heads up, some readers may love this story while others might not.

Marcus Wilding ~ Duke of Pleasure or also known as the Duke of Worthing finds Lady Julianna Armitage in his home late on evening or early morning when he returns with an unusual and rather improper request. Julianna is the younger sister of his best friend and is now a widow mourning for he late husband.
Marcus has loved Julianna long before she married Armitage; he was away fighting in Europe when she married and missed his chance to ask for her hand in marriage four year ago. It is unfortunate that many women at this time in England had marriages where they were treated brutally by their husbands desiring to gain position through marriage and in want of an heir only from their wives. Men like Armitage found pleasure outside of marriage and society looked the other way.The story is mostly naughty until Julianna finally confesses to loving Marcus and they find a happy ending in each other's arms. I found it entertaining with bits of humor written into a risque situation and it wasn't nearly as naughty as it could have been...
